How are we all doing out there??? I want to hear from all of the ladies on my buddy, Donita’s side of the world in Italy and Germany~ Donna’s friends and mine in the good ol’ USA, our band of merry Crackers here in Yongsan and any other ladies and gentlemen joining our KOPIK Club in search of Cracking the Fat Loss Code.
I have heard from a few ladies whose husbands are teaming up to make this a couples quest… how awesome is that?! Kudos to Scott Thompson and Tom Isom ~ and if there others out there, please chime in and be heard:-)
How are the headaches doing? Mine is gone… I am not sure if you are all aware but the symptoms of ketosis are headaches, body aches and sometimes both. This by-product of Ketosis {pronounced /ki-tosɪs/ ; is a state characterized by elevated levels of ketone bodies in the blood, occurring when the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies (which can be used by all of the body for energy as an alternative to glucose. These ketone bodies are a by-product of the lipid metabolic pathway after the fat is converted to energy.} is dubbed “Atkins Flu” and will go away after your body has adjusted to using fat as fuel instead of glucose.. In 1 to 3 days, the headaches should go away leaving you with, hopefully, a new found energy and diminished food cravings. Until then, take Tylenol to keep the pain threshold at a tolerable level and be sure to get enough water in daily.
I am looking forward to keeping the focus and witnessing the moment when this gets easier… it should be soon. I will see you at the gym and I hope that if you haven’t decided yet on how you are going to incorporate “moving your body” into your total wellness plan… that you give it some thought today. We can only affect so much through nutritional means but to gain total wellness, we must incorporate the physical exercise that stresses the muscles, joints, bones and heart to perform at a higher level. Conditioning our minds and bodies to live the healthiest life possible… that is what we are reaching for~ so think about how you can achieve it! And let me know what you plan to do… and try to start it today!
Here are some ideas for this cold, cold weather in Korea:
~Go to the DHL and walk up and down the stairs from the lobby to the Mezzanine and down to the basement for 15 minutes or take the stairs in one of the towers and climb for 15 minutes and ride the elevator down.
~Bundle up and briskly walk from the South Post Shoppette to the Main Post Shoppette… buy some TicTacs as your reward. (Lisa says there are Zero Carbs in TicTacs.~ it is amazing the wealth of knowledge that comes from examining the food labels on every thing that goes in your body!:-)
~Pack up your swimsuit and head up to Indoor Pool #3 and swim for 15 minutes. They have mini-flippers, body floaters and paddle boards to assist you at the start.
~As Donna says, “check out the variety of fitness classes offered at Collier.
OK GANG>>>> Help me out here… lets try to come up with some “alternative” workouts that might work for 1 person or hopefully a whole group of folks.
Remain Tough and Tenacious!!
Always,
Tracey

I shared this with Tracey, but I will share this with my fellow crackers. I head to the dentist for my yearly check up. The nice young Capt. is doing the exam and he stops and tells me, "You need to brush your tongue more often". Okay, completely embarrassed, I try to slink further into the chair. He stops again and asks..."are you taking supplements? Vitamins? Changed your diet? My foggy brain wants to know how he knows I am carb depleted? Yes, sir I have cut my sugar intake (far too low I come to find out-no wonder my head was going to explode)and I have been drinking protein shakes 2 times a day as a snack. Well, that explains it...EXPLAINS WHAT? I guess my breath was not too pretty. Later in a conversation, I share with Tracey the story and I tell her my mouth tastes like metal. I honestly thought it was my old school fillings I was tasting..after all, it has been 1 year since the dentist. Low and behold..that metallic taste is a common "side effect" (Tracey can explain it better in a scientific way) of the carb deplete. Moral of that story.. Up the listerine.......does it have carbs?-:)! And fear not...your fillings are not all of a sudden going bad on you! Thank goodnes for week 2!
once again, thank goodness for Tracey and her wealth of knowledge and ability to put it in writing! You amaze me! I can think it, but it never comes out the way I want:(
Just had my egg white and cheese and am feeling mighty fine. I am still amazed at how I managed the dinner lst night!!!!
Today I am taking 2 friends (non crackers) to yoga class to introduce them to the world of calm...if anyone is interested, see you @ Collier at 0830! Namaste!
Karen,
Thank you for sharing your experience with the dentist... What you are realizing a few changes that are attributed to ketosis and they are are...
1) Bad breath: due to ketones being released through your breath, drinking more water will lessen this effect. Some people also report that they get a metal taste in their mouth... and it is not your fillings or a protein powder after-taste:-)
2) Strong urine odor: due to the presence of ketones in your system.
3) Light headedness/headaches: this does not occur in everyone and many who do feel this are helped by making sure they are getting enough to eat and enough water. Water intake is extremely important since high levels of ketones in the blood stream can trigger a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production thru fat conversion ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys to processing the protein, reduces water retention, helps to ease constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odor.
You sure do have an "ace" dentist there Karen... very wise doctor indeed!

DW,
Thanks for the boost of confidence! I love to cheerlead for folks but I too get a lot of "energy" from a word of praise or as my kids would say, "tossing me a bone". It makes me proud to know that you appreciate what is going on:-) As for my communication, I try to make the connection and hope that I construct and word my thoughts so that folks can learn from them. I always worry that I may offer up too much info but I pray that if it assists in some way then it is worth the work to get it out there.
Hey... I might have a new motto for our Crackers Worldwide...
"Concresco Catena” ... it is Latin for “Strong Together” ... Donita what is it in Italian?? Is it nearly the same??
I love it! Cuz it conveys exactly what we are.... Drive on into Day 4 with a smile!!
Always,
Tracey
Tracey,
Although I would love to say my husband is joining in -- I can't. In fact my son won 2 free Mongolian BBQ at the Navy Club tonight so we are going. I had a moment of joy because I thought I could eat bean sprouts which I love. OH NOoooooo... they actually have 6 carbs per cup!! So I'll cabbage, celery, mushroom and lean meat it with no sauce or rice and enjoy it!! I did find a way to curb hunger pains..Get sick and the doctor will presribe antibiotics the size of a human finger which requires 15 ounces of water to swallow and you are full for hours... Okay, mentally I might be losing it a bit!
Lisa,
Go and "enjoy" the Mongolian BBQ thru your family's enjoyment of it...
it takes mental willpower and the ability to transpose their gratification in eating the BBQ to your gratification in knowing they enjoy it so much!! I call it "vicarious nutritional consumption" and there is no carbs in it at all:-) I do it consistently now and it allows me to stick to my precompetition phase diet down since I don't need to physically consume what they are eating to mentally enjoy it with them!
I sure hope the antibiotics are helping you get back on track...feel better soon
Always,
TT
Okay crackers,
Thursday morning and I finally have enough energy to run a little, thank heavens. And I am glad to know the body aches are part of the process, my back is aching. I have to say Scott and I are taking turns being grumpy so at least we aren't grumpy at the same time, our poor children. Scott got the munchies in the middle of the night last night, he normally has a glass of milk to go back to sleep, I think he had a slice of turkey. I know he didn't eat enough at dinner. Any other suggestions for the midnight munchies?
Thanks ladies!
Ali
Ali,
I grab into my meat bucket or sometimes if I feel like something sweet, I will take the few minutes to make some chocolate protein pudding. One of the two usually does the trick!
You are achy too? My neck is what is bothering me along with overall muscle fatigue (beyond the normal:-)
~TT
PS: Have you tried the blender yet??
OK, so I feel fine....I am not too sleepy (except for the fact that I stayed up until midnight reading), My muscles feel good...but I have only lost 2 lbs!!! I am hearing that others have lost 4-5...What gives? I am drinking my water, eating the right way etc....WHat is going on? I just was wondering, I am not that upset abotu it, just curious at the pace.
The thing I am missing the most as far as eating is fruit!!! I always have fruit and it is not fun. I am smelling cantelope.....Wouldnt mind some candy, too.....and wine...and...haha
Keep up the good work Crackers!!!
EVERYBODY::::
Cracker meeting tomorrow at 11:45-1300 at the library. Bring your book and journal. Can't wait to see everyone!
oh, and I will be trying out the pilates class tonight at Collier..6:30 pm, same place as yoga!
(would love some Crackers to come too!)
John is doing the plan with me. I keep reminding him it is a lifestyle change. NOT a diet. I am not sure he is convinced. I have been making his salad after he goes to work and them to him at work. I think he is happy to see Beatrice and I during the day so it works for him. I must admit I am not working out. I haven't quite figured it out logistically or timewise. I miss the endorphin rush of running but it is sooooooo cold. John has lost 6 pounds and I have lost 5. Kristi, I think it is because I have so much MORE to lose. Lifestyle change, Lifestyle change, Lifestyle change, if I keep saying it I will eventually believe it. Looking forward to oatmeal on Monday.
Kate, Isn't it so funny that we are looking forward to OATMEAL on Monday? Tell me what is wrong with that picture???
And yes, a lifestyle change it is!
See you tomorrow!
Hello Crackers:
How I'm doing? Is hard to says. We flow yesterday at 8:20pm Thanks lord I put 4 portion of meat in a plastic container and I survive the Day with respecting all my restriction. Her we go first challenge my son is hungry at the airportI get a hamburger for him a nothing for me. I did't still any fries WOW that huge. Second challenge airplane food bad they serve my favorite thing rice with meat, I just eat the meat an the veggie I did't touch the bread That other one is huge!! But really is so hard been away. This morning I wake up at 7:00am (Manila time) I took my vitamine a cup of coffe and then when to the gym. (Jogging 3.5M)My precius moment was when we make to the supermarket and I FOUND COTTAGE CHESSE!!! Yeeeeee That was my second meal. Was great. I'm try very hard to survive here. Everybody is taking drink, eat chetos, burger go to McDonals and so, and so!! I have my cottage cheese, egg, tuna, and Tyson chicken and I think I got it!! But please help!! I need some enforment!!!! we almost done is only 3 days to go
ViVi! We love you and YOU CAN DO THIS!!! Remember that we are thee with you and as long as you have your things you can it, all will be well! Only a few more days of being so restrictive so keep going!!!
So Karen thank you for letting me know I am not alone with the nasty taste, I actually had a Soldier step back from me today when I was talking to him...the nerve. Donna, thanks for making me do 12 minutes on that horrible machine and the Pilates, I almost lost it a few times though; I don’t know if my bladder is weaker or it’s just the over flush of water and its starting to come out my ears! I have become accustomed to boiled egg whites and rolled deli meats. I was saddened to know that I can’t drink until week 3 though, I was looking forward to that drink. My back is killing me and I feel as though my kidneys are footballs but after tonight’s weigh in I am down 4 pounds and my skirt wasn't cutting off my circulation today. All in all, I feel pretty darn good and I even avoided the yummy looking cake today at the Volunteer of the Quarter Ceremony, plus seeing everyone with blue teeth was a huge deterrent. Happy cracking everyone!
Hi Crackers,
I too am profoundly saddened to see that a glass of wine does not enter the picture until week 3. (Lisa - stop laughing). I had not read that far until last night. I just started with week 1 by jumping right it and did not want to tempt myself with what I could do during week 2 so read no further. I finally let myself delve into the the book to learn about the next weeks and was searching for that glass of wine. I had already planned a glass for my day 8. So - I must adjust my attitude and now I am also looking forward to oatmeal on day 8 - I have missed it. I wish I was in the gym to work out with you guys. I did a combo of stair climber/bike/treadmill yesterday and felt horrible. I then did an upper body workout and found myself wishing that I could look around for Tracey or Ali for some encouragement. I am going to swim today so hopefully that will go better. Keep on chugging all of you - it helps to know there are other people in the same situation so that I don't think about slipping up. My son also let me bluntly know about the breath thing. Yee-haw.
Dear Crackers,
I am writing this letter to let you know how incredibly awesome you all are!!! As I read down thru the blog, I cannot help but realize that each one of you is special in how you look at life and challenge yourselves everyday... whether it is running 3.5 miles when you are so tired and hungry or you joke about backing off someone with your "sweet breath"... I am so proud of you and want you to stop for one moment and realize what you have accomplished up until this point...
You have set this goal and focused with all of your energy to stay on course. Now my question to you is... when we cross that 7 day Carb Deplete Week Finish Line, will there be anything in this world that you cannot do if you put your heart and mind to the task???
I would bet my last protein bar that you ladies will be mentally and physically strong enough to do anything you choose:-)
Viv, make the choices that you know are right and be proud of them. Don't worry that you are going to fail or weaken... you cannot and will not because you have too many friends standing with you that won't let you do that:-)
Laurie and Aundrea,
I second the "emotion" on the wine... I cannot wait to treat myself to my wine... but first we must earn it! and just think how sweet it will be to sip the from the glass of success:-)
Donna,
You are Magnificent!!
And to all the rest of our Cracker Clan~ Are you ready to glide thru Day 5? I know you are and I am too...
Let's Rock!
~Tracey
